Our kitchen is stuffed full of vegetables. I’m not exaggerating; the crisper in the fridge is full, the shelves are loaded, and there are precarious stacks of leafy items overflowing all over the place. Even our countertops are covered in onions and tomatoes and cloves of garlic.
It’s like living inside a market! It’s also pretty inspiring – I’ve been zipping through my cookbooks and picking out recipes for all the various produce.
Last week I browsed online and found a local organic farm (Pfenning’s) that offers home delivery of organic produce. Huzzah!
Pfenning’s have four options for baskets of produce – the Local Basket (veggies and fruits from local farms), the Wild Basket (focusing on leafy greens from local and distant farms), the Fruit Basket (sort of self-explanatory, no?) and the Blender Basket (a combination of all the baskets). They’re available in two sizes (small and large) and you can customize the baskets by adding other products from the online store front.
We signed up for a basket of local foods, since they don’t require you to sign up for any length of time, and filled in all the information required. I also added in a few items – dried pineapple, brown rice syrup, agave nectar syrup and some vegan broth cubes. The basket and additional contents were delivered yesterday morning.
I am exceptionally pleased. Wow!
The produce in the local grocery stores is looking wilted and faded. It’s either been in storage here for a while or it’s been “en route” to Canada from some far, distant, warm land for a long, long time. Zehr’s, the local store, has an organic section that includes carrots and bendable-limp celery and.. not much else. The entire section is leaning toward depressing.
But the contents of this basket are just plain fantastic. The purple cabbage was thick, heavy and not waxy. The beet is bigger than a softball and firm. The onions and carrots were healthy and crunchy. The collection of round potatoes and the mushrooms both made Coffee very happy. The pea tenders and bean sprouts fill the packages completely. The turnips are plump and healthy. The hydroponic lettuce is crisp and juicy and sweet. And it’s ALL ORGANIC!
I am so happy to have found this company – and I absolutely recommend them to anyone in the area. They have a pretty big delivery zone and they’re friendly people. Check out the online store – everything from veggies to milk and cheese and prepared foods.
I’ve placed an order for delivery next week – trying out the Blender basket. I’ll let you know how it goes.
In the meantime, however? Pfenning’s Organic gets two thumbs up. Huzzah!
