I’ve used something like this to move 8′ shelves around on a flat floor. They can be rented.

If you’re going into the basement with it then… don’t. Seriously. Some things aren’t worth the hassle and this sounds like one of ‘em.

I find neighbor teens really handy for this sort of thing, and pretty cheap if you don’t give them a chance to think about it.

Clearly, the ONLY way to solve this problem is to chop all our furniture up (for easy movement) and then buy all new stuff. I like the way you think, Nicole! :)

Sadly, I don’t think that the dolly would help. It’s a piece of furniture taller than me, much wider, and it’s moving into the basement and we have a curving stair well. Even moving book cases that were less tall about as wide, and less deep was difficult, and I didn’t have a problem holding up the weight of the book cases. I can barely get this set of drawers off the ground, and that’s when I have firm footing.

No, I’m not driving to K/W to help you move furniture :-)

So assuming you can’t get some friends to help (which is usually what I do), you have two choices:

1) Do it yourself. As Nicole pointed out, dollies and the other tools that movers have can help. So if you don’t want to hire movers, you can usually rent the necessary gear at your usual rental place. Make sure to rent some of those movers blankets to protect your floors from the dollies.

2) Hire movers. Smaller moving companies will gladly rent you a couple of guys for a couple of hours to move furniture around, and it’s not as expensive as you might think. I think my parents, who are both retired and live way too far away for me to help, paid a crew $300 (total – cash only please) to move 4 rooms full of furniture so that they could paint, and then move it back/around again a few weeks later.
