Bird.

Yesterday, in addition to a mini-flock of robins in the tree, I saw 4 of the most beautiful birds EVER. And I have no idea what they were.

They had a body that was similar to a female cardinal – tall, thin and with the cresty-mohawk feathers on top – but with yellow bellies and dramatic black “masks” around their eyes. Very dainty but fierce. And there were 4 of them, all the same, in the tree. Perhaps a family of young’uns returning?

I need to find my bird book and dig through it until I figure out what kind of birds they are – since my powers of explanation, obviously, aren’t going to help me Google this one.

If I can get a picture, I totally will – maybe one of you knows what they are?

EDITED: And, after a quick perusal of my ancient copy of “Birds of North America” (copyright 1966), I have identified them as Cedar Waxwings! (I feel really smart right now. Really, really smart.) Aren’t they pretty?

Oh my goodness, SO pretty! Maybe you could come down my way and identify the trees outside our window? I have some beat-up old guide books but they aren’t helping. Or possibly I don’t know how to read them.

Robins? You saw Robins? See I thought I saw one last week too, but I didn’t have my contacts in yet and I decided that I was wrong, that it was too early. Maybe I did see one after all.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! You KNOW how much I love BIRDIES!!!! (and as the late great Angela would have said, “Am, if you want to be taken seriously as a birdwatcher, you will have to stop calling them birdies!”) That is cute possibly the cutest bird I have ever seen, with the exception of my Pingu last night, preening the fine hairs on my cheek!

Definitely one of the most beautiful birds ever to fly the earth. When I lived in Little Rock, a flock of these came through each March and stopped at my bird bath and also stripped my cedar tree of little blue berries. Maybe this bird was one of them.
