Stunned.

Yesterday I realized that narwhals are… real.

I had always thought they were a science fiction invention (like unicorns) from some popular sci-fi book that I hadn’t read, or some long-extinct creature (like dinosaurs). And then I stumbled across a photo that did not appear to be some funky Photoshop job.

Then I checked wikipedia.

And then my head exploded because, seriously? How could I have lived for 33 years without knowing narwhals are.. real?!

WTF?

Ok. True Story. I went up to Ottawa to visit a friend a few years ago, and she took me to visit the Parliament Buildings. We parked downtown in some underground lot near there, and when we came up the elevator we were in the lobby of some huge office tower. There, hanging from the ceiling, was a life size (larger?) narwhal. I stared at it and said “wtf is that?” and she told me all about them. I didn’t really believe her. I thought she was making it up to see how gullible I was. I was mid-thirties at the time too. So you are not alone.

I know it freaked me out too! When I lived in the arctic I bought Am a pair of narwhal earrings and I think they were made of narwhal tusk, but I was confused as to whether or not they were real or fictional.

    Sea unicorns! TEE HEE!

I have never even heard of a narwhal before, so you were ahead of me on that one.

However, I did not know that roadrunners are real until I saw one hanging out on my street.
