Note – I cannot afford to purchase an eBook reader. I do not have any immediate plans to find the money to purchase one. I confess that I know almost nothing about them, too.
But I have been thinking about them a bit lately and trying to figure out whether, a) I’d ever actually use one, and, b) if I would use one, which one would I like?
So, perhaps you have one? Or perhaps you have been looking into them for a good, long time? I’d appreciate your thoughts!
I’m thinking that I’d like one that I could easily carry around in my backpack – so, nothing enormous. It’d help if it was somewhat durable, given that I’d be the one owning it and carrying it around.
I’d need really good battery life – either a fairly simple reader or something with the ability to turn on/off fancy options that consume extra power. Something that charges really fast would be nice, but less important than a long-lasting battery.
I’d like it to be compatible with as many formats as possible – Amazon, my (public) library, other stuff I might download..
Back-lighting would be awesome for reading in the evenings/night, but I’m pretty sure I recently read that none of the current readers have that option. Am I wrong?
Something that allowed SD cards, or other forms of additional memory, would be good.
I do not need it to play mp3s or movies or whatever. I have an mp3 player and my tiny Eee for those. This would be solely for reading books while I’m oot and aboot. Possibly for downloading textbooks from my school library.. Hmmm..

These sound cool but there is just something about the smell of a book. You know when you’re holding it up against your face after reading a really good sentence, and it just smells right?

I use a Bookeen Cybook (http://www.bookeen.com/ebook/ebook-reading-device.aspx).
Like it alot; it’s pretty expensive though, and lacks the “always online” features of either the Kindle or the Nook, but it works. Currently waiting for the (long-awaited) upgrade to EPUB from MOBI (which, after being purchased by Amazon, has been left to wither) via firmware.
If I end up buying a Kindle or a Nook, maybe I’ll give it to you. ;-)
