June 2010

  1. Open windows for any length of time? Awesome.
  2. Finding out that work will reimburse me for the training I signed up for, on my own.
  3. Bare feet.
  4. Getting a brief nap before my night shift. Here’s hoping it helps!
  5. Spending time with my beloved husband.
  6. Egg salad. Not on bread, just with a fork.
  7. This is a two parent household in which both parents actually do the work. I am thankful pretty much every second of every day for this fact.
  8. I got my first pay deposit! (It’s tiny – for exactly 4.5 hours’ worth of work :)
  9. The first day of the kids’ summer vacation went fairly well. We need some new routines!
  10. Getting stat pay for the shift I’m working overnight tonight! Yay!
  11. I paid my tuition today. Yeeesh. But I’m good to go for next year..
  12. My library has a pretty decent selection of ebooks – it just involves some digging to find them.
  13. I need to wear a belt with my favourite pair of jeans now. (This is both a GiST and a DAMMIT moment..)
  14. The meeting I was at this evening gave me some clue as to what I’m in for tonight. Forewarned is forearmed, right?
  15. Getting closer to setting my blog up to allow me to post via email. Handy when I’m, uh, not home.. la la la.
  16. Bonus: the cat follows me around, mewing, and purrs when I snuggle her. I will make her a lap cat yet! (Ha, not likely.)

The majority of the shifts that I’ve been offered, and those that I’ve accepted, are “overnights”. The majority of those are the “awake overnight”-style, meaning that I will not be sleeping (or attempting to sleep) and will need to be productive and reasonable. I have no idea how this is going to go; I have no idea if I will survive.

I have had more phone calls, however, than I ever thought possible – to the point that I could easily work every weekend and, if I were on speed or meth or whatever, I could have every single day/afternoon/evening/night shift for that entire weekend.

It’s kind of crazy.

The good thing is that Coffee is home during most of the shifts I’ll need to work. The bad thing is that the kids are on summer vacation now – meaning I’ll need to attempt sleep during times when Coffee isn’t home to wrestle them into silence to protect that sleep.

Google calendar is my friend in a BIG way right now.

My phone never stops ringing – ditto for my cell phone.

This is why I keep falling behind on GiSTs and other things. I am awesome at multitasking – but not when my entire LIFE is a multitask. :)

Teacher Gift?

I have, once again, completely forgotten the whole concept of the “end of year gift for a teacher” — and tomorrow is the last day of school.

Go me!

Most opinions seem to go with spending up to $100 for a gift – or gift certificate – which is wholeheartedly out of the budget given that there are three kids in this family. One kid has 5 or 6 different teachers and none of them are particularly “the most important”.

Is a nicely worded note too little? It seems reasonable, to me, but I am definitely not the Queen of Etiquette and I could use some advice here. Please note that it’s far too late for me to make anything, craft-wise, and I don’t have anything sitting around here that could be re-gifted appropriately..

HELP!

  1. Ordering a bunch of (eye) glasses for myself, Coffee and one of the kids. We’ve ordered from Zenni before and have been very happy, in case you’re thinking about it.
  2. Hummus!
  3. Awesome Blossom! Homemade! (And then deep fried pickles and mars bars. Ooof. Full!)
  4. Falling asleep on Coffee’s arm while watching TV.
  5. Weekends are a good thing.
  1. There was a very inconvenient mix-up with my hours this weekend – but it was resolved!
  2. Working my way through a stack of library books, slowly but surely.
  3. Pizza on Fridays. Easy-peasy dinner.
  4. I actually slept on my overnight shift. Oh, it wasn’t good quality sleep, but it was sleep. Phew!
  5. Waking up next to my husband.
  6. Dealing with some unpleasant things, successfully. At least, it appears as such.
  7. The way the cat follows me around mewing and trying to lure me to the cupboard where we keep cat treats.
  8. An episode of “The Office” involving a “bisexual suit” that a friend reminded me of on Facebook and which has made me giggle ever since.
  9. Making plans.
  10. There are a lot of people out there who are very supportive of the choices Coffee and I make for our kids. I like when things fall into place in multiple ways.
  11. Trying a root beer flavoured liqueur. (It was good, but I won’t buy it again at that price.)
  12. The Sex.
  13. Mornings on the sofa with a mug of coffee and my husband.
  14. The phrase, “That’s what you get for…” when used by Coffee (and directed at me). It almost always cracks me up.
  15. Getting laundry washed, dried and put away – before the end of the weekend!
  16. Bonus: the sound of rain on the solarium. Loud!

Earlier today I was glaring at my eyebrows in the mirror and trying to decide what I want to do with/about/to them. The problem with this ‘technique’ is that the more I stare at them, the weirder they look.

After a minute or two, they look completely alien and I can’t conceive of why they’re even ON my face in the first place. This is not helpful.

I noted on Facebook that I was considering shaving them off completely and then, every morning, using a Sharpie to draw on a new pair. Some helpful people added that I should use a different colour Sharpie each day and do a monobrow and, well, yeah.

So I grabbed a webcam pic of myself and gave it a shot. For my first attempt, I went with “natural” arches. I think I may be on to something.

This is flattering, no?
