It seriously doesn’t count – at all – if you turn the machine up to some ridiculously high resistance level and then use your arms to basically support all of your weight while you flail your legs underneath you.
That’s about as effective as sitting on the back of a tandem bike, letting your legs go around, but never actually exerting the effort to pedal.
My tip: turn down the resistance level and actually DO the workout.

I disagree. That’s a very tough arm workout. Kudos for turning a cardio machine into a strength training device!

I personally love seeing people on the treadmill with the height set to the max using the bar on the treadmill to pull them along at high speed, with their body leaning 15 degrees backward. I’ve only just *barely* resisted asking them if they know that they’re really not getting a reasonable workout; I guess there could be a reason that they’re doing that.
