    I once uncovered holes the size of electrical outlets in a wall and covering that over proved very do-able. They sell some mesh stuff for that. But you’re right, then you have lumps and unevenness in the wall surface. What the paint store person explained to me is that you don’t want to use a high gloss paint over an uneven wall because the lumps or waves will really show. But a matte finish helps hide it, as does one of those textured paint techniques like ragging. And don’t forget…you can always disguise an irregularity by hiding it behind a floating shelf, painting or whatever.
