Forky-Spoony.

Coffee and I disagree on how to load the cutlery into the dishwasher. So, I’m posting a poll.

For the sake of clarification, this is assuming you have a normal dishwasher, with a cutlery basket that’s got a lot of holes.

I’ve identified the orientation of the cutlery using the “tines” (as a fork has), but it should be interpreted to include the ‘bowl’ area of the spoon, and the blade part of the knife.

Cutlery goes into the dishwasher:

  • With the tines pointing up (and the handle pointing down) (37%, 13 Votes)
  • Knives point down, everything else points up (31%, 11 Votes)
  • With the handle pointing up (and the tines pointing down) (23%, 8 Votes)
  • Some other option that I'll state in the comments (9%, 3 Votes)
  • All willy-nilly - who cares? (0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 35

Mind you, my cutlery holder has extra holes. And I haven’t replaced it yet. So if I don’t have the handle side down (or if I put them in the space with the giant gaping hole), the tines or knife blades fall through and get stuck on the door or the jets or something and nothing gets clean.

My dishwasher is an all around lemon.

My dishwasher is my two hands. They don’t have a preference.

Knives should be hand-washed and juggle-dried.

I picked “knives point down, all else up”, but really the dull butter knives are pointing up and the sharp knives are pointing down. :)

Mixed. Some up, some down, otherwise they’ll nest together and not get clean.

Sharp knives go blade down, no exception.

Don’t people wash their hands before unloading the cutlery? Are they really so freaked out about someone touching their cutlery with a bare hand??

Michelle and I have the same dishwasher, it seems. We have a couple spots that can only hold “big spoons angled in a certain direction”, and knives can only go in a couple places as well. Everything else is fine, as long as the handles are up.

I don’t have a dishwasher and haven’t had one since I moved out of my parents’ place 15+ yrs ago, but when I load the dishwasher at my parents’ place, I load the cutlery with the eating/slicing part facing up because otherwise my dad will re-arrange it to be the RIGHT way.

Oops! I checked the wrong one! Delete the first one, I actually point all dirty sides DOWN. I do not handle the dirty portions, therefore they are always down and handles are always up.

Do we get to hear which one of you argues for which way? I don’t have a dishwasher now, but when I did, and also when working in the kitchen at hospice: I only load pointy knives point down (for safety’s sake), and all other utensils up because I somehow don’t trust the dishwasher to get them clean otherwise. But I could be wrong about that. And all expensive knives get hand washed and immediately dried and put away in the knife block. I do baby my good knives.

There’s still a few days to go before the voting closes, and then I’ll reveal which one of us believes which method to be correct.

But, regardless of the outcome of the voting, it makes me absolutely gleeful that no one has picked “all willy-nilly” and that people DO care which way things get loaded in! :)
